ABOUT HOLI FESTIVAL

Holi is a Hindu spring festival, originating from the Indian subcontinent, celebrated predominantly in India, but has also spread to other areas of Asia and parts of the Western world through the diaspora from the Indian subcontinent, also known as the “festival of colours” or the “festival of love”.

The festival signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, end of winter, and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships. It is also celebrated as a thanksgiving for a good harvest.

It lasts for a night and a day, starting on the evening of the Purnima (Full Moon day) falling in the Vikram Samvat Hindu Calendar month of Phalgun, which falls somewhere between the end of February and the middle of March in the Gregorian calendar.

The first evening is known as Holika Dahan or Chhoti Holi and the following day as Holi, Rangwali Holi, Dhuleti, Dhulandi, or Phagwah.

The festival marks the arrival of spring. Known widely as the festival of colors, it takes place over two days, and is a celebration of fertility, color, and love as well as the triumph of good versus evil.

People take part in Holi all around the world, but it is celebrated the most in parts of India and Nepal. It is often associated with the colored powders that end up coating its participants after they’ve thrown them at each other.

Holi is split into two events: Holika Dahan and Rangwali/ Color Holi. Holika Dahan takes place the night before Rangwali Holi Wood and dung-cakes are burned in a symbolic pyre to signify good defeating evil (in Hindu Vedi scriptures, the God Vishnu helps burn the devil holika to death).

The next morning, people gather in public spaces and take part in Rangwali Holi. This is a raucous affair where people chase each other around, throwing handfuls of colored powders (known as gulal) at one another, while getting drenched in water.

The timing of Holi is synchronized with the moon, which means that the dates of each celebration varies year on year. This year Rangwali Holi will take place on the 24th of March, while the pyres of Holika Dahan will be burnt the evening beforehand.

Holi is an ancient celebration. Mentions of it can be dated back to 4th-century poetry, and it was described in a seventh-century play called Ratnaval. It prevents diseases.

The weather during Holi induces the growth of bacteria in the atmosphere and our bodies. There’s a reason why celebrations start with a Holika bonfire on the night before Holi.

The heat from the fire cleanses these bacteria.  It promotes good health. We experience tardiness (feel sleepy and lazy) due to the change in weather conditions. The fun movements during Holi celebration rejuvenate our body while getting rid of laziness.

There are few health benefits of natural colours of Holi. During spring, the weather changes and our bodies get more prone to diseases like measleschicken pox, viral fever, and cold. That’s the reason why colours were made from natural sources earlier.

The color penetrates our skin, strengthens the immune system and helps us ward off diseases. Many colours are obtained by mixing primary colours. Artisans produce and sell many of the colors from natural sources in dry powder form, in weeks and months preceding Holi. Some of the traditional natural plant-based sources of colours are:

Orange and red

The flowers of palash or tesu tree, also called the flame of the forest, are typical source of bright red and deep orange colours. Powdered fragrant red sandal wood, dried hibiscus flowers, madder tree, radish, and pomegranate are alternate sources and shades of red. Mixing lime with turmeric powder creates an alternate source of orange powder, as does boiling saffron (kesar) in water.

Green

Mehendi and dried leaves of gulmohur tree offer a source of green colour. In some areas, the leaves of spring crops and herbs have been used as a source of green pigment.

Yellow

Haldi (turmeric) powder is the typical source of yellow colour. Sometimes this is mixed with chickpeas, gram or other flour to get the right shade. Bael fruit, amaltas, species of chrysanthemums, and species of marigold are alternate sources of yellow.

Blue

Indigo plant, Indian berries, species of grapes, blue hibiscus and jacaranda flowers are traditional sources of blue colour for Holi.

Magenta and purple

Beetroot is the traditional source of magenta and purple colour. Often these are directly boiled in water to prepare coloured water.

Brown

Dried tea leaves offer a source of brown coloured water. Certain clays are alternate source of brown.

Black

Species of grapes, fruits of amla (gooseberry) and vegetable carbon (charcoal) offer gray to black colours.
